Mother of two, enemy of slumber, Lydiaemily is the ever-churning hand behind a varied body of painted work spanning more than a decade.
Lydiaemily believes in the honesty of the human form and its freedom to move through space as rendered by emotion. As much post-impressionist as post-Pettibon, her boldly stroked acrylic-on-canvas works are what happen when things under the skin surface with the help of religion, pop culture, and mapmaking. Her "Sentimental Monsters" series, begun in 2003 with the aim of recasting a brute or two, helped stick her name in the collecting consciousness. As those paintings often paired popular bogeymen with a female nude, she wasn't surprised. While enjoying no formal art instruction,Lydiaemily is quite literally a culinary academy graduate and a beauty school dropout. She has shown in such Western capitals as New York, Los Angeles and Berlin. Her work has also been seen in the pages of Helio magazine, on bottles of Asylum Cellars syrah and on gig posters for musical artists Silversun Pickups and Josh Haden. When she's not painting—sometimes while she's painting—Lydiaemily raises her two young daughters Coco and Lulu. |
